Facts about Mosquitoes in Spain
In Spain, there are 63 species. Most of these are native, such as Culex pipiens (common mosquito), a species present throughout Europe. The number includes three invasive species that arrive from other parts of the world, transported by traveling people, in vehicles, or through plants or used tires. These 3 species are:
Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito, native to Africa).
Aedes albopictus (tiger mosquito, native to Asia).
Aedes japonicus (established in Cantabria since 2018).
What diseases do mosquitoes transmit?
These mosquitoes are vectors of several arboviruses that can infect humans or other animals, and parasites like malaria.
Aedes aegypti and Ades albopictus can transmit yellow fever virus, dengue, chikungunya, and Zika. Culex pipiens and Aedes japonicus are vectors of the West Nile virus. Cases of these diseases can be imported-brought to Spain by a person infected in another country, or be locally transmitted cases.

Only adult female mosquitoes bite. A female needs one blood meal for every batch of eggs she produces. All mosquitoes have 4 distinct life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Mosquito eggs require standing water to hatch successful hatching. Eggs can survive in water for seven years before hatching. With 100% survival rate, a single mosquito could be responsible for over one billion descendants in less than a month.

Characteristics of Treatment
The treatment we use is a concentrated emulsifiable insecticide based on cypermethrin and tetramethrin. Specially made to used against flies, mosquitoes, wasps, cockroaches, ants, spiders, fleas and silver fish. The insecticide is diluted and sprayed throughout the garden into all plants, shrubs and hedges using a high pressure pre-compression pump. This effective treatment eliminates these pests for good, at least for 6 weeks!
